With all the new infections & viruses making their way into our body, it is the need of the hour to keep our immunity strengthened & supported. Prevention is definitely better than cure – Ayurveda’s fundamental principle.

Ever wonder why some people get sick while others do not seem to be affected at all, even though they are in the same infected environment. If you observe closely the ones getting sick will also be the first ones to pick up an infection or catch the flu going around. Why is this? What differs in these individuals is the strength of the body’s immune system. Your body’s first line of defense against the enemy (viruses, pathogens, parasites) is the body’s immunity, with it’s prime focus being to scavenge and kill off the bad guys that enter and pose a threat to your body. When your defense system is down that’s when you come under attack and fall prey to the enemy.

Ayurveda the ancient science of life believes in prevention of disease first and later curing of disease. Prevention of the disease is possible if the body of a person is physically, physiologically & psychologically balanced. This kind of healthy body will have the strength or immunity known as ‘Vyadhikshamatwa’ in Ayurveda to fight various kinds of diseases caused by poor diet, lifestyle, environment or stress. This immunity is also called ‘Ojas’ or ‘Bala’ in Ayurveda.

There are various factors which contribute to the optimal functioning of the body’s bala/ ojas/ Vyadhikshamatwa which include a balance in the tridosha’s of the body (three humuros – Vata, Pitta, Kapha), well nourished body tissues (dhatus), normal agni (digestive fire or metabolism) and a mind free from stress.

The bala or strength of immunity in a person can be attributed to three factors – natural, seasonal or acquired. Natural strength is the inherent strength of a person that is present from birth, in simple words a person born with a very strong immunity. Kalaja or seasonal is the strength the body gains due to changes in seasons. While acquired immunity is the one which is gained by various diet, regimens, use of therapies, herbs and natural medications.

Some of the most common regimens, therapies and medications suggested by Ayurveda are:

  • Diet
  • Consume warm light foods like porridge, soups, stews, cooked meals, etc.
  • Avoid cold drinks or cold food as they hamper digestion
  • Avoid heavy fried foods that slow down and make digestion sluggish
  • Daily use of spices like ginger, black pepper, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon in food which boost immunity. Can be used in infusions (herbal teas), dressings, curries, soups, etc.
